Ya’ll Come Back Now
By Adam Berry and Sherri Blevins
Mountain Valley News (MVN) spoke with members of a new community “connect group” called, “Let’s Get Back To The Redback” to find out what this group is about and how it came into being.
Broadway Baptist Church hosts many connect groups throughout the year to connect individuals together who have common vinterests. These groups center around a variety of activities including sports, Bible studies, art, finance, music, health, and just about any topic a group chooses. Erin Berry, her husband Adam, and David Holt began this new, music-centered group.
Adam shared his comments about the group with Mountain Valley News. He stated, “The days of all-day singings and dinner on the grounds are now but a sweet memory. The powerful hymns of Victory in Jesus, How Beautiful Heaven Must Be, and Amazing Grace are the song’s we all grew up singing, and they will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Times are changing and so is the music. From praise and worship to contemporary bands, you do not see the old hymns as much anymore. The message and power in these songs are still the same. Don’t believe me, then let me invite you to Broadway Baptist Church on Thursday nights at 6:00pm for a grand ole time of “Let’s Get Back to the Redback.” Whether you’re a singer, musician, or just enjoy listening, come expecting a blessing. In late winter of 2019, my wife and I were talking about the message in those old songs. They are just as powerful as the songs of today. Her statement, “I wish we could just get a group together, and just sing,” marked the beginning of something….well something that has grown more than we ever thought possible.”
Erin Berry shared her vision with David Holt and David’s immediate response was, “I’m in.” Then the word began to spread, “The first night of the singing there were more people there than I thought would attend this connect group, overall, and every week since we have grown,” stated Erin.
MVN asked others at the singing why they chose to participate. Billy Poe stated, “I was raised in this environment, and the feeling I got then is still there today. I enjoy it.”
Phillip Black, another participant, replied, “I love hearing the word of God in song. It builds me up and edifies me preparing me for everyday living.”
Ronald Harris added, “It is the kind of music I grew up on, and I enjoy singing it.”
Finally, Sandra Wright said, “I enjoy singing, and I love hearing people who have grown up doing this style of music. I love trying to sing it myself.”
Adam continued, “This is not just open to members of Broadway. People attend from churches all over the area. From the singing and worshiping, to the fellowship, and even a funny story from Don Bowman, you do not want to miss a Thursday night at the Broadway Faith Chapel. As stated in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am also.” Ask anyone who has attended on Thursday nights, and they can tell you, ‘We’ve had meetin.’ Please accept our special invitation to join us on Thursday nights at 6:00pm in the Faith Chapel at Broadway Baptist Church. “Y’all get back to the Redback now, Ye’ hear.”
