Charles Mauney To Retire

At the recent DeKalb County Commission meeting, President Harcrow announced the upcoming retirement of County Attorney Charles Mauney in December of this year. Mauney has served the commission as its attorney since December of 2009.
President Harcrow stated, “I have known Mr. Mauney for fifty years. It has been a pleasure to have you work for us and be surrounded by your honesty and integrity in all you have done for us. We wish you the best in your retirement. We will miss you and want to thank you for all you have done.” Each of the other commissioners spoke of Mauney’s professionalism, integrity, kindness, encouragement, wisdom, and especially of his practice of keeping his Christain values present in his law practice.
Mauney responded, “I am so humbled by what you all said. I especially appreciate what you said about my Christian values. I was saved when I was ten years, seven months, and three days old, and I was baptized when I was ten years, seven months, and ten days old. I thank you for never questioning my integrity or advice. May God bless you all, richly.”
The commission also thanked all retired DeKalb County Educators by issuing an official proclamation naming November 19, 2019, as Retired Teachers Day in DeKalb County. Retired Educators of DeKalb County President Luther and Vice President Gibson thanked the commission for the recognition and reported that retired educators are still very active in the lives of the county’s children; contributing many hours of volunteer work to support various organizations that benefit children. Luther stated that the number of reported volunteer hours by the educators would total a monetary amount of $105,376.92 in paid hours.
During the business portion of the meeting, the commission acted on the following items:
Hired Richard Doeberl, William Baker, Joseph Garrett, Terry Haynes, and Raymond Downer at the road department
- Approved posting one additional opening at the road department
- Approved sending out bids for a new bush cutter for the road department
- Awarded the County Road 115 & 188 Traffic Striping Bid to J.C. Cheek Contractors for $5,500.00
- Amended the County Transportation Plan to include the spending of Federal Exchange Money in District 3 to repair three additional roads
- Approved sending County Engineers Luther and Wallace to the National Association of County Engineers Conference
- Approved sending out bids to purchase items for three EMA projects with funding provided by a recent Homeland Security Grant of $88,270. 00 (The money will be used to purchase a county-wide utility vehicle for the DeKalb County Fire Association, auto external defibrillators for the county patrol cars, and upgraded technology for work stations at the Emergency Operations Center.)
- Approved hiring Brandon Vaugh as a corrections officer at the sheriff’s department
- Awarded a bid from Twin City of $32,600.00 for a surplus Tahoe
- Awarded a bid from Twin City of $23,500.00 for an F450 vehicle for pulling county equipment
- Approved joining an OPIOID Class Action Lawsuit
- Approved the 2020 FY Transportation Resolution for the Council on Aging (COA)
- Approved the COA Travel request for the year
- Recognized the sacrifice of life by World War II Veteran, Frank Slater of Fyffe
The next DeKalb County Commission meeting is Tuesday, November 26, 2019.
