The Fort Payne Wildcats retained the Top Cat Trophy for a 3rd straight year with a 28-0 win over the Scottsboro Wildcats. Kaden Dubose got the Cats on the board with just under nine minutes of play after a 70-yard drive was capped off with a 2-yard run for the score to give Fort Payne a 7-0 lead. Jake Barnes hit Sawyer Burt on a 23-yard pass for a touchdown to extend the lead to 14-0. With just under a minute left in the half, Fort Payne scored on a Barnes to Marcus Ledford 10-yard touchdown to give the Fort Payne Wildcats a 21-0 lead over the Scottsboro Wildcats. In the second half, Fort Payne forced a Scottsboro turnover. From there, Barnes found Ledford for a 15-yard touchdown strike as Fort Payne extended the lead to 28-0. Fort Payne’s Alex McPherson attempted a 62-yard field goal late in the third quarter, but it just missed wide left. That ended the scoring tries for both teams as they traded punts and the clock struck 0 to give the Wildcats of Fort Payne the victory over Scottsboro 28-0 and capture the Top Cat Trophy. Fort Payne will travel to Southside on Friday, October 8, for a region matchup at 7:00 pm. Scottsboro will travel to Oneonta for a non-region matchup.
