Pisgah Is 3A Champions
The Pisgah Lady Eagles softball team put last year’s regional tournament struggles behind them last week and emerged as champions, punching their ticket to the state finals in Montgomery. Pisgah plowed through north regionals like a team on a mission, going 3-0 with mercy-rule wins over East Lawrence, Lexington, and Plainview.
East Lawrence fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 13-2 opening round loss to Pisgah on Thursday, May 9. Pisgah scored on a home run by Macy Anderson and a home run by Kennedy Barron in the first inning. East Lawrence struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Pisgah, giving up 13 runs. Pisgah scored six runs in the third inning. Lady Eagles contributing to the big inning included Molly Heard, Jaden Burgess, and Kaylee Vaught, all driving in runs in the inning.
Leigha Kirby was on the rubber for Pisgah. She allowed three hits and two runs over five innings, striking out five and walking one. Briley Pitt led things off on the rubber for East Lawrence. She allowed 13 hits and 13 runs over four innings, striking out one. East Lawrence hit one home run on the day. Devora Izquierdo put one out in the fourth inning. Kaitlin Dutton, Izquierdo, and Pitt each managed one hit to lead East Lawrence.
It was more of the same when Lexington fell behind early in round two. The Golden Bears couldn’t come back in a 10-0 loss to Pisgah. The Lady Eagles scored on a home run by Vaught and a single by Hannah Duncan in the first inning. Lexington struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Pisgah, giving up ten runs.
Barron was the winning pitcher for Pisgah. She surrendered zero runs on one hit over six innings, striking out two and walking zero. Mycala Mitchell took the loss for Lexington. She surrendered ten runs on 15 hits over six innings, striking out four. Pisgah hit three home runs in the game. In addition to Vaught’s first-inning homer, Annie Hughes went deep in the fourth inning, and Barron put one out in the sixth.
Kaley James went 1-for-3 at the plate to lead the Golden Bears in hits. Pisgah racked up 15 hits in the game. Vaught, Barron, Duncan, Hughes, and Anderson all managed multiple hits for Pisgah. Vaught led the Lady Eagles with four hits in five at-bats. Pisgah was sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Bella Bobo made the most plays with four.
The winners’ bracket final saw Pisgah face off with area rival Plainview. The Lady Bears stayed in it until the fourth inning when the Lady Eagles pulled away in a 12-2 victory Friday, May 10. Pisgah got on the board in the first inning. Anderson hit a solo homer. The lady Eagles pulled away for good with nine runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth Hughes drew a walk, scoring one run, Anderson drew a walk, scoring one run, Barron doubled on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring one run, Duncan homered on the first pitch of the at-bat, scoring two runs, and Burgess singled on a 2-0 count, scoring two runs.
Kirby pitched Pisgah to victory. She allowed four hits and two runs over six innings, striking out three and walking zero. Tessa Word took the loss for Plainview. She went three and two-thirds innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits and striking out one. The Lady Bears socked one home run on the day. Crimson Wells put one out in the third inning. Mia Tidmore, Tobi Trotter, Krimson Kidd, and Wells all had one hit to lead Plainview Bears Varsity.
Wheeler, Burgess, and Heard each managed multiple hits for Pisgah. Pisgah didn’t commit a single error in the field. Barron had the most chances in the field with five. The Lady Eagles advanced to take on Hale County on Wednesday, May 15, in the opening round of the state tournament in Montgomery.
